  • This was inspired by a Frank Sinatra Birthday FB post by someone named Wendy Witterschein.

    Now here is something I didn't know. Can you imagine being invited by Princess Grace to do anything at the age of 25?! I also thought that the Live at the Sands album was the 1st time he worked with Frank & Basie. Wrong as it shows below. He also arranged & conducted for them in 1964 and for the Sands album in 1966. So that means he arranged for the Chairman in 1958, 1964 and 1966 at the tender ages of 25, 31 and 33!! Frank was born in 1915 and the Count was born in 1904.

    Work with Frank Sinatra

    Q first worked with Frank Sinatra in 1958 when invited by Princess Grace to arrange a benefit concert at the Monaco Sporting Club. Six years later, Sinatra hired him to arrange and conduct Sinatra's second album with Count Basie, It Might as Well Be Swing (1964). Jones conducted and arranged the singer's live album with the Basie Band, Sinatra at the Sands (1966). Jones was also the arranger/conductor when Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, and Johnny Carson performed with the Basie orchestra in June 1965 in St. Louis, Missouri, in a benefit for Dismas House. The fund-raiser was broadcast to movie theaters around the country and eventually released on DVD. Later that year, Jones was the arranger/conductor when Sinatra and Basie appeared on The Hollywood Palace TV show on October 16, 1965. Nineteen years later, Sinatra and Jones teamed up for 1984's L.A. Is My Lady. Quincy was quoted saying,

    "Frank Sinatra took me to a whole new planet. I worked with him until he passed away in '98. He left me his ring. I never take it off. Now, when I go to Sicily, I don't need a passport. I just flash my ring."

  • § Jim, I had a horrible cold over the weekend for 4 days and couldn't sleep. Actually it's pretty easy. Quincy Jones was born in 1933. I was trying to show how great his talent was at such an early age. He was a mere 25 years of age when Princess Grace asked him to arrange a benefit for her and Frank Sinatra. He was 31 when Frank asked him to arrange & conduct his 2nd album with Count Basie in 1984. And he was only 33 when he arranged and conducted the Sands album in 1966 (obviously with the Count's approval), one of Frank's greatest. Let's keep in mind that some of Frank's favorite arrangers were Riddle, Costa and May, to name but a few. All of those latter arrangers were closer to Frank's age because they were born in the same era as he was prior to 1920. So when Frank was 43 years old he basically let a mere youth of 25 to arrange one of his concerts! In my book that is totally amazing. I guess it could be comparable to an Aerospace Engineer like von Braun asking a young engineer almost 20 years younger to do some important work for him. I hope that makes it clearer.   • Found this gem while trying out new internet radio stations. Great variety, lots of great music you've never heard before, as well as some better-known rock. No commercials. Sound quality is poor, but if you are looking for fresh, new performers that you will go nuts over, this station is Da Bomb.

  • I read this in TAS - These drum pads can be used just like Onzo Zero-Dust to clean a cartridge stylus, but at a fraction of the cost. Just lower the stylus into the gel pad, then lift. Repeat for dirtier stylus. Use at your own risk. I did not test this myself (yet).
