  • The link above will take you to the online IT magazine Ars Technica, where they are attempting to get to the bottom of audiophiles and their love of expensive cables.

    While I don't think the test was particularly well set up, I haven't noticed much difference in Ethernet cables myself. If you are listening to music over your home network, your in-wall cables are the least of your problems, and for long runs, the audiophile versions of these cables are not affordable anyway.

    If you read the article, the use of such generic equipment to test with, and make it A/B/X, where the listener has to decide what he/she is listening to, makes this very hard. To give you some idea of the problem: tests of listeners to different pianists playing the same score find they don't identify the pianist correctly better than chance either. This can involve recordings in different halls, studios, on different pianos, etc. When people listen to music, they don't focus on the "reality" of the recording--they focus on music extraction. It's better to listen to something like a person speaking gibberish, or sound effects, or natural sounds than to music. However, the tests in Ars to demonstrate that non-audiophiles are going to be very skeptical of marketing claims and there hasn't been a clear-cut case of scientific support yet either. The same can be said of high-priced wine, but at least with wine you can argue that preference is entirely subjective.
