· DSD playback at Merrill Wettasinghe's meeting June 23-13    posted Jun 23, 2013 (show)
  • DSD playback is new technology; have questions
  •
  •
  • All,

The DSD playback I heard today at the meeting at Merrill Wettasinghe's, June 23-13, sounded really good to me.

DSD playback is new technology to me; I have questions for ya, Merrill...and I will include your answers in the newsletter report on your meeting (after giving you a draft 1 to review of course).

Here are the questions I noted today at your house:

--where do you get DSD material?

--How does it play back? E.G.

-----------------From what source into the DAC (an SACD player? PC?) Over what kind of cable?? Coaxial? USB?

-----------------Will any players export digital DSD out from an SACD disk to the Meitner or other DAC?

    George Witterschein, newsletter editor

PS Merrill: thanks for a great meeting. I look forward to learning much good stuff from your Reply post.

  • § The Files are stored on a Network Attached Storage (NAS) on 4 Terbytes (TB) of mirrors disks. The NAS is accessed via Gigabit Ethernet, on a 2.3GHz Windows 7 computer. The music folders on the NAS are divided by my on personal logic which I will won’t explain here. The folders on the NAS are Mapped as disks drives on the Windows Computer. Jriver is used as the music organizer and player. Jriver is told to use each of these mapped drives as a library. Jriver will then scan each mapped drive for music, tags, covers and other items. The music files can be anything from 44/16 to 192/64 in WAV, AIF, m4a, dsf, w64,flac, aiff, and many others. Jriver can play the files in native format and resolution or any fixed resolution and convert to any format you would like. I have configured Jriver to play all music in its native resolution and format. Since the Windows Computer feeds a Meitner MA-1 DAC that is capable of DSD input, Jriver is configured to send over USB the DSD music stream using DSD over PCM protocol (DoP) on the Aschrynornous USB. The Meitner received the audio stream and processes, outputting an analog stream. If the file is DSD, then the Meitner DAC will process it as a DSD otherwise it is processed according to the resolution it is in. You can see the format change on the front of the Meitner indicator lights which show the resolution and DSD.
Additionally, Jriver is configured to play the music from memory, that is it will read in the file to memory and then play it from memory. The read ahead is 6 seconds of music in memory before Jriver starts playing, hence it has plenty of room and reduces any jitter problems from reading directly from disk (other the network in this case).
All other programs are shutdown on this computer including any antivirus software. Fidelizer, introduced to me by Al Mirabella, is used to shutdown any other programs on the computer.

For DSD downloads or SACD’s, there are many excellent sides on the web. Start with

  • After a long search for a successor, the club has found its next president in Neal Patrone, a member for seven years. He succeeds the retiring Russell Prince, who has been president since January 2001. Russ will be moving to Williamsburg, VA by the end of June 2013. The New Jersey Audio Society is one of the oldest in the nation, having been continually active since the early 1980's.

  • § Funny but for some reason, I always thought Neal was Catholic!

Considering Russ' gray hairs and bad knees, I am not sure congratulations are in order but best of luck my friend and long may you reign.
Sorry I missed the meeting but the Queen & me were in NYC, on an extremely rare occasion, to see a show (Newsies). Who knows when I will be able to drag her butt to NYC again?

Without going into too much detail, the Act of Settlement (superseding the Act of Succession) was recently modified by treaty to allow Catholic presidents! Which is good news for Neal!

· Superberry!    posted May 17, 2013 (show)

  • I was pleased to read about the good showing of Igor's Superberry DAC at Alan's last month. I have enjoyed my Superberry, purchased used from George W., for several years now. I have never felt that any of the shortcomings of my system could be traced back to this DAC. As I have made upgrades elsewhere in the signal chain, I have been rewarded by improved digital sound from my Squeezebox Touch. Recently, I downloaded my first hi-res files from HDTracks, and the Superberry did a wonderful job with the 96/24 sampler from Audiogon. But when I read that many at the meeting agreed that the Superberry trumped a $6500 DAC, well, that's just guilding the lily!
